Family tradition drives Koons of Culpeper
© Virginia News GroupThe name “Koons” is well known to car-buyers from Fredericksburg to Woodbridge. Now it has become a part of the Culpeper automotive scene.
“We opened June 10, but this has been in the works for awhile,” said John Koons, assistant manager. “We are purchasing the Verizon building, in fact this entire property, (on the lot where a trailer now houses offices). We're here for the long run.”
Koons – John William Koons IV – is the great grandson of his namesake, who founded the company in 1964. The company also has stores in Fredericksburg, Manassas and Woodbridge, each run independently by a member of the immediate family as well as throughout Northern Virginia.
“Culpeper is a booming market,” Koons said. “It's steadily growing and we saw an opportunity, so we took it. Car sales are just starting to pick up again. Since mid-2012 they have grown 6 percent nationally. And used cars sell better than new cars in a bad economy.”
Koons said his biggest challenge is trying to find financing that suits the needs of customers.
“But the challenge is also the fun part,” he said. Every day is different and every customer is different.”
Koons of Culpeper will focus on used car sales for the time being, but may add new cars after a couple of years, Koons said.
Family connections make it likely, he said, that he can find the vehicle a customer is seeking if it's not on the lot.
“If someone is looking for a specific car, I can call Fredericksburg or Woodbridge,” Koons said.
Salesman Randy Gum said he has been in auto sales since 1977 and went to work for Koons because of their reputation for honesty.
“I worked with Richard Pratt (general manager) for 13 years,” Gum said. “If he tells you it's snowing in August you don't even need to look out the window. You just go put your boots on and grab a shovel. If he wasn't here I wouldn't have come.
“Koons has a good name. And it's nice to be with something new in town and to get fired up about it.”
John Koons said he expects good results in Culpeper.
“We want to offer variety to this area which has a little bit of a limited car selection,” he said. “We heard Culpeper is a great market and we are excited to be here.”
