Traffic alerts: Route 29 shifts to new bridge, I-66 ramp opens

Traffic will be changing on Route 29 overnight beginning Tuesday, May 24.

Traffic on southbound Route 29 between I-66 and Linton Hall Road will shift onto the new bridge over the railroad tracks.

The ramp from eastbound I-66 to southbound Route 29, at Exit 43A, will be re-opened.

In addition, the traffic signal at Route 29 and Linton Hall Road/Route 55 will be removed, with Linton Hall/Route 55 traffic shifting onto the new overpass.

Following the traffic shift, work will begin to complete the ramps from Route 55 to southbound Route 29 and from northbound Route 29 to Linton Hall.

Detours will be in place while these ramps are under construction. Motorists heading from northbound Route 29 to eastbound Linton Hall and from eastbound Route 55 to southbound Route 29 will be detoured via temporary ramps.

Those on westbound Linton Hall heading to southbound Route 29 will be detoured via Wellington Road and University Boulevard.

The final Gainesville traffic switch is scheduled to occur this summer with the completion of all ramps connecting Linton Hall/Route 55 to Route 29.

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s $230 million Gainesville Improvements project is scheduled for completion this summer.

All activities are weather permitting.
