March 19: Culpeper police seek to identify possible car theft suspect

Culpeper police are seeking the public’s help identifying a man suspected of stealing a car from the parking lot of the Culpeper Wal-Mart Supercenter and possibly shoplifting items from the store last Saturday.

The man, who wore a hooded sweatshirt, and is believed to be between 28 and 35 years old, allegedly took a store employee’s 1988 white Buick LeSabre from the parking lot between 5 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. The vehicle, which bears Virginia License XSR-4885, has not been recovered.

The man is a medium complected black male, who stands between 5 feet 5 inches and six feet tall.

This is about the ninth car older model car stolen in Culpeper in the last 11 months. Most of the vehicles have been recovered in the Washington, D.C. metro area. In addition, most of the cars had damaged steering columns when recovered.

“It’s possible that the suspect in the most recent case lives in the Washington, D.C. area,” said Detective Sergeant Jeff Dodson.

Anyone with information may anonymously call Crime Solvers at 540-727-0300 or Sgt. Dodson at 540-829-5526.
