Benefit planned for Haymarket police chief’s family tonight at Giuseppe’s

A fundraiser for the family of Haymarket Police Chief Jim Roop following the death of the chief's son on Christmas Eve is scheduled for 7 p.m. this evening at Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant in the Town of Haymarket.

Haymarket Planning Commissioner Bob Weir sent out an e-mail today stating that the purpose of the fundraiser is to deal with the "burden of funeral expenses."

According to Josie Russo, who owns the restaurant along with her husband Joe, there will be a $10 pizza buffet available from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight with 100 percent of proceeds going to Roop.

A silent auction is set to follow the buffet. Russo encouraged those stopping by to bring items for the auction. Items already up for bidding include gift cards to different establishments, a tree and a hand-made scarf.

"We heard about it last night and as soon as we heard about it, we (said) that we would do anything to help him out," said Russo.

Giuseppe's is located at 15120 Washington Street in Haymarket.
