VDOT mobilizes for wintry mix possible in Culpeper

CULPEPER — Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation are on duty to respond to the wintry mix forecast to affect Central Virginia today and into Monday. While the amount and type of precipitation may vary significantly across the area, all motorists are advised to use caution and be sure of conditions before traveling.

Today VDOT personnel have readied equipment and supplies to prepare for the storm. Crews have also pre-treated Interstate 64 from Afton Mountain to Charlottesville with a brine solution to help prevent ice from forming on the road surface.

Crews will remain on duty to apply salt and sand when precipitation falls, as well as to plow roads as snow begins to accumulate.

Motorists are cautioned to check local weather and road conditions before traveling. Reduce speeds when driving in icy conditions, increase following distance and allow plenty of travel time.

Motorists should check VDOT’s 511 travel website, www.511virginia.org, before leaving on a trip. The website is updated in real time with weather and road conditions for all highways in Virginia. Once on the road VDOT’s 511 mobile app provides real-time traffic and weather information for both iPhone and Android platforms. Travelers can also call 511 from any telephone in Virginia for real-time information on traffic and road conditions.
