According to the Virginia Code (58.1-3916) the Board of County Supervisors has the power to extend this deadline. Covington directed the County Executive, County Attorney and the Clerk of the Board to draft legislation for consideration at our next BOCS meeting on Tuesday, October 8th, to extend the deadline up to the 90 days allowed by the VA Code and/or provide penalty relief for late property taxes.
“In recognition of the fact that many citizens have already endured years of economic uncertainty due to the inaction of Congress to pass their own budgets and now, many of those same citizens today literally do not know when their next pay check is coming, we as their elected officials have a duty to use our power to bring them some relief," he said.
The board next meets on Oct. 8.
