"Much Ado About Nothing" at The Theatre at Washington, VA

“Much Ado About Nothing”
by William Shakespeare
Each September, students from Cambridge University in England bring to the United States a professional quality production of a Shakespeare play. The students’ annual performances at The Theatre have been outstanding. The Cambridge American Stage Tour (CAST) says of this year’s play: “Filled with live music, a line-up of vibrant characters and sparkling dialogue, this is Shakespeare’s comedic skill at its absolute best. As devious strategies are prepared, sides drawn and redrawn, and untruth after untruth exposed, the outcome of each romantic match is just too close to call — at least until the final hand has been shown!”

An Evening of Blues: Damon Fowler & Jarekus Singleton at The State Theatre of Culpeper

You wonder if there might have been a mistake on his birth certificate. The way this guy plays guitar, his given name should have been Demon instead of Damon Fowler. The fiery guitarist’s slide, dobro and lap steel riffs have been snapping heads around since his ’99 debut, Riverview Drive, produced and played on by legendary rocker Rick Derringer.
But as he has proved with a string of albums for Blind Pig beginning with ’09′s Sugar Shack, Fowler doesn’t need any help getting his message across. A blend of sacred steel, backwater blues and howling, greasy swamp rock, Fowler’s music is a primal, atavistic sound that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. His solo gigs with his skin tight power trio have converted rooms full of strangers into a loyal congregation who now attend his services regularly, and his exposure as half of the twin guitar attack (with J.P. Soars) of the newly convened blues supergroup Southern Hospitality and their March 2013 release Easy Livin’ has given him evangelical status among the faithful.

An Evening With Mark Russell at The Theatre at Washington, VA

An Evening With Mark Russell Long before Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, there was Mark Russell, daring to joke and sing of the often absurd political process. Mark continues to play off the day’s headlines, performing stand-up comedy while accompanying himself on the piano. He draws merriment from the pomposity of public life. Reading three or four newspapers a day allows him to constantly update his material. The result is that no two shows are ever identical. “I thrive on newspapers,” he frequently states. “And it looks like I will be thriving longer than them.” (Drawn from Mark’s website: www.markrussell.net.)

The three met while attending Belmont University in the city, introduced to each other through music and mutual friends.

Rhonda Vincent, The Queen of Bluegrass to perform at The State Theatre of Culpeper

Bluegrass vocalist and fiddler Rhonda Vincent began her professional music career at the age of five, playing drums with her family’s band, the Sally Mountain Show. She picked up the mandolin at eight and the fiddle at ten, performing with the family band at festivals on weekends. After appearing on TNN’s nationally televised You Can Be a Star program in her mid-twenties, Vincent struck out on her own, singing with the Grand Ole Opry’s Jim Ed Brown, eventually leading to a deal with Rebel Records. Her work with Brown and her Rebel recordings caught the attention of Giant Nashville’s president, James Stroud, who signed Vincent to record two contemporary country albums. After her time at Giant, she moved to Rounder Records, and demonstrated her passion for the traditional music she grew up with, on Back Home Again.

A car accident in December 1999 kept her from a planned trip to Nashville for auditions, so she hired her band (unusually named the Rage) through the Internet. Rhonda Vincent & the Rage have gained popularity at bluegrass festivals since their formation, playing hard-driving, high-energy contemporary bluegrass music. Her 2001 album, The Storm Still Rages, was nominated for seven International Bluegrass Music Association awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year, while fiddle player Michael Cleveland and banjo player Tom Adams earned nominations in their respective instrumental categories. A three-year unbroken string of IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year awards led to the 2003 release of One Step Ahead, another tour, and another well-deserved showering of critical praise.

Recorded in front of a hometown crowd in St. Louis, Ragin’ Live arrived in 2005, followed by All American Bluegrass Girl in 2006, Good Thing Going in 2008, and Destination Life in 2009. After parting ways with longtime label Rounder Records, Vincent released Taken in 2010, and followed it with 2011′s Your Money and My Good Looks, a duets album with Gene Watson. Released in 2012, Sunday Mornin’ Singin’: Live! was a gospel-themed album and DVD recorded at the 100-year-old Greentop United Methodist Church in Greentop, Missouri, where Vincent first began singing in public as a child. Early in 2014, Vincent returned with Only Me, a double-disc set that showcased her bluegrass and country roots.

The 21st Annual Great Pumpkin Ride

Saturday, October 25, 2014
The 2014 Great Pumpkin Ride is scheduled for Saturday, October 25, 2014.

Come out and enjoy one of the prettiest days of the fall foliage season in Virginia! The ride is sponsored by the Fauquier Trails Coalition, a non-profit organization, and is a fundraiser to extend and connect existing trails in scenic Fauquier County.

The Great Pumpkin Ride has an option for everyone -- 26, 47 or 68 miles. (Yes, we know this is different mileage than what's on BikeReg. The mileages changed ever-so-slightly once we adjusted the entrance and exit to our Poplar Springs rest stop). Our rest stops are fully stocked and include popular Great Pumpkin Ride treats such as pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie, pumpkin seeds and pumpkin cake -- as well as traditional rest stop items. Roving mechanical support and sag wagons will be provided.

Our routes this year were planned and designed by the good folks at The Bike Stop in Warrenton. The 26-mile route is basically unchanged from last year. The 47 and 68 mile routes are partially new this year, as both of those rides will be going to our newest rest stop, Old Busthead Brewery in Vint Hill.

There will be 4 rest stops for this year's Great Pumpkin Ride:

Poplar Springs -- 26, 47 and 68 mile routes
Mt. Horeb Church -- 47 and 68 mile routes
Old Busthead Brewery -- 47 and 68 mile routes
Remington Baptist Church -- 68 mile route only

The 2014 Great Pumpkin Ride T-shirts will be long-sleeved, and they will be designed by Leading Edge!

68 mile route - 9 am start
47 mile route - 9 am start
26 mile route - 10 am start

The Great Pumpkin Ride is a rain or shine event -- there are NO REFUNDS!

The field is limited to 1,250 riders this year, and there will be NO day-of registration!

“Much Ado About Nothing” at The Theatre at Washington, VA
