1939 DOUBLE FEATURE showing at The Library of Congress Packard Campus

1939 DOUBLE FEATURE
IN NAME ONLY (RKO, 1939)
In this romantic melodrama, Carole Lombard plays widow Julie Eden, who meets and falls in love with unhappily married Alec Walker (Cary Grant). Alec’s manipulative wife, Maida (Kay Francis), who married him only for his wealth and family prestige, refuses to give Alec a divorce. She convinces everyone -- even Alec's parents -- that she is the victimized one and that Alec is an irresponsible philanderer. The usually dour New York Times critic Bosley Crowther wrote, “The story, while obvious, is thoroughly convincing, thanks to the ‘natural’ attack which director John Cromwell has taken upon it and to some delightfully pleasing dialogue…. And a generally excellent cast contribute in making this one of the most adult and enjoyable pictures of the season.”
Black & white, 94 minutes

BACHELOR MOTHER (RKO, 1939)
Ginger Rogers shines in one of her best comic roles as Polly Parrish, a salesgirl at a large New York City department store. The unattached Polly leads a quiet life until she surprisingly finds herself the caretaker of an abandoned infant, while everyone believes that she is the actual mother. New York Times critic Frank Nugent wrote, “Although the theme of mistaken maternity is one of the venerables of farce, this treatment of it—written by Norman Krasna, directed by Garson Kanin and played by so many pleasant people—is too logical, too human, too humorous for outright farce. It is comedy, simple if not always pure, and we must call it one of the season's gayest shows.” This sparkling farce which also stars David Niven and Charles Coburn became one of RKO's biggest box-office champions, in that championship year of 1939.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT - SILENT VERSION

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT - SILENT VERSION (Universal, 1930)
The transition from the silent to the sound era in cinema did not happen overnight. Theater owners were faced with the high cost of installing the needed equipment and studios wanted to continue to release their films to the foreign market, which was simple enough to do by changing the title cards. One solution was to make two versions of a film, which is what director Lewis Milestone did with “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Many consider it one of the finest silent films of all time—and one that very few people know exists, because the sound version of it is so famous. This vivid, poignant adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s eloquent pacifist novel about German boys’ experiences as soldiers during World War I stars Lew Ayres, Louis Wolheim, John Wray, Raymond Griffith and Slim Summerville. The film was restored in 1998 by the Library of Congress and added to the National Film Registry in 1990. Live musical accompaniment will be provided by London-based Stephen Horne for this rare screening of the silent version the Academy Award winner for best picture and best direction.

Presented by Gravatt Entertainment
Sponsored by Collis Jenkins
Join us for the pre-show Halloween costume party at 6:00, free with your ticket – heavy hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, and live DJ. Prizes for best costume.
Eddie Money was born Edward Joseph Mahoney on March 21, 1949, in Brooklyn, New York. Although he dreamed of being a musician, after high school, Eddie decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a police officer.
In 1968, after serving as a New York City Police Officer for two years, Money put his law enforcement career on hold to pursue music. He moved to Berkeley, California and began performing at local clubs. Then, in 1976, after changing his surname from Mahoney to Money, Eddie’s fate changed when he was introduced to legendary promoter Bill Graham while performing at one of Graham’s events. The two quickly became close, with Graham serving as both a mentor and manager to Money. Said Graham of Money, “Eddie Money has it all…not only can he sing, write and play, but he is a natural performer.”
After signing a recording contract with Columbia Records, Money burst onto the scene with his eponymous debut album in 1977.

HERE'S EDIE: THE BEST OF EDIE ADAMS ON TELEVISION showing at The Library of Congress Packard Campus

HERE'S EDIE: THE BEST OF EDIE ADAMS ON TELEVISION (1960s)
Edie Adams (1927-2008) may be best known as the Muriel Cigar girl, for her movie roles in "The Apartment" and "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World," or for being the widow of actor and comedian Ernie Kovacs. Her work as creator/producer/star of her own variety series on ABC or as a pioneer television conservationist is often overlooked. Adams' tireless efforts going back to the 1960s to locate, acquire and save the television programs of her late husband won Kovacs a new generation of fans in the 1970s, and two recent DVD box sets have done even more to boost his reputation as "television's original genius." This program of highlights from Adams' successful and inventive variety series "Here's Edie" (ABC, 1962-64) will be presented by Ben Model, archivist for the Kovacs/Adams collection. The 21 episodes of the show were released on a DVD box set last year, thanks to the work of Adams' son Josh Mills, and had been unseen since they first aired. Look for guest stars Sammy Davis, Jr., Terry-Thomas,Rowan & Martin and Soupy Sales among others in the songs and sketches that will be presented.

“Friend of a friend” is the way it all came together, three very different people from very different places, united by a shared love of music. As a band, Judah & the Lion owes much to fate and to the small town feel of Nashville, the city that brought the trio together from scattered parts of the country. The three met while attending Belmont University in the city, introduced to each other through music and mutual friends.
“We all had similar stories, despite the fact that we’d grown up in different places,” explains mandolin player Brian Macdonald, “Judah is the Southerner, I’m the Chicago city slicker, and Nate is the laidback, bearded Rocky Mountain guy.”

MARCEL PEREZ: INTERNATIONAL SILENT COMEDIAN REDISCOVERED showing at The Library of Congress

MARCEL PEREZ: INTERNATIONAL SILENT COMEDIAN REDISCOVERED (1912-1925)
Probably the greatest silent film comedian you've never heard of is Spanish-born Marcel Perez. Part of the first generation of screen clowns, his career began in Paris in 1900 and flourished until 1928. During that time Perez helped create the ground rules for the genre in Europe and continued to refine the basics in the United States. An international favorite, Perez was, along with Max Linder, one of the few direct links between European and American silent comedy, and made more than 200 starring shorts. The obscurity that he’s fallen into today is due to the scarcity of his surviving work combined with the gypsy-like way he traveled through early screen comedy – constantly renaming himself and his screen character. Fortunately, several of his films survive and have been preserved by the Library of Congress. This evening of rare Marcel Perez comedies will introduced by film historian Steve Massa who is largely responsible for Perez' recent discovery by classic film fans, and accompanied by Ben Model who, in cooperation with the Library of Congress, is producing a new DVD "The Marcel Perez Collection" due out by the end of this year.

Movie: Boyhood showing at The State Theatre of Culpeper

“Boyhood” (2014) Rated R*

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, this film is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason, who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. This drama charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay’s Yellow to Arcade Fire’s Deep Blue. The film is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It’s impossible not to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey.

Rhonda Vincent, The Queen of Bluegrass to perform at The State Theatre of Culpeper

Bluegrass vocalist and fiddler Rhonda Vincent began her professional music career at the age of five, playing drums with her family’s band, the Sally Mountain Show. She picked up the mandolin at eight and the fiddle at ten, performing with the family band at festivals on weekends. After appearing on TNN’s nationally televised You Can Be a Star program in her mid-twenties, Vincent struck out on her own, singing with the Grand Ole Opry’s Jim Ed Brown, eventually leading to a deal with Rebel Records. Her work with Brown and her Rebel recordings caught the attention of Giant Nashville’s president, James Stroud, who signed Vincent to record two contemporary country albums. After her time at Giant, she moved to Rounder Records, and demonstrated her passion for the traditional music she grew up with, on Back Home Again.

A car accident in December 1999 kept her from a planned trip to Nashville for auditions, so she hired her band (unusually named the Rage) through the Internet. Rhonda Vincent & the Rage have gained popularity at bluegrass festivals since their formation, playing hard-driving, high-energy contemporary bluegrass music. Her 2001 album, The Storm Still Rages, was nominated for seven International Bluegrass Music Association awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year, while fiddle player Michael Cleveland and banjo player Tom Adams earned nominations in their respective instrumental categories. A three-year unbroken string of IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year awards led to the 2003 release of One Step Ahead, another tour, and another well-deserved showering of critical praise.

Recorded in front of a hometown crowd in St. Louis, Ragin’ Live arrived in 2005, followed by All American Bluegrass Girl in 2006, Good Thing Going in 2008, and Destination Life in 2009. After parting ways with longtime label Rounder Records, Vincent released Taken in 2010, and followed it with 2011′s Your Money and My Good Looks, a duets album with Gene Watson. Released in 2012, Sunday Mornin’ Singin’: Live! was a gospel-themed album and DVD recorded at the 100-year-old Greentop United Methodist Church in Greentop, Missouri, where Vincent first began singing in public as a child. Early in 2014, Vincent returned with Only Me, a double-disc set that showcased her bluegrass and country roots.

The 21st Annual Great Pumpkin Ride

Saturday, October 25, 2014
The 2014 Great Pumpkin Ride is scheduled for Saturday, October 25, 2014.

Come out and enjoy one of the prettiest days of the fall foliage season in Virginia! The ride is sponsored by the Fauquier Trails Coalition, a non-profit organization, and is a fundraiser to extend and connect existing trails in scenic Fauquier County.

The Great Pumpkin Ride has an option for everyone -- 26, 47 or 68 miles. (Yes, we know this is different mileage than what's on BikeReg. The mileages changed ever-so-slightly once we adjusted the entrance and exit to our Poplar Springs rest stop). Our rest stops are fully stocked and include popular Great Pumpkin Ride treats such as pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie, pumpkin seeds and pumpkin cake -- as well as traditional rest stop items. Roving mechanical support and sag wagons will be provided.

Our routes this year were planned and designed by the good folks at The Bike Stop in Warrenton. The 26-mile route is basically unchanged from last year. The 47 and 68 mile routes are partially new this year, as both of those rides will be going to our newest rest stop, Old Busthead Brewery in Vint Hill.

There will be 4 rest stops for this year's Great Pumpkin Ride:

Poplar Springs -- 26, 47 and 68 mile routes
Mt. Horeb Church -- 47 and 68 mile routes
Old Busthead Brewery -- 47 and 68 mile routes
Remington Baptist Church -- 68 mile route only

The 2014 Great Pumpkin Ride T-shirts will be long-sleeved, and they will be designed by Leading Edge!

68 mile route - 9 am start
47 mile route - 9 am start
26 mile route - 10 am start

The Great Pumpkin Ride is a rain or shine event -- there are NO REFUNDS!

The field is limited to 1,250 riders this year, and there will be NO day-of registration!
