Earth Day Hike/Volunteer Project and Stewardship Virginia at Sky Meadows State Park

Meets at the Backcountry Trailhead

Learn how our award winning conversation practices protect this stream as it runs through the park and eventually into the Chesapeake Bay. We will cover 2.5 miles of trail. Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather and adventure.
This hike includes the opportunity to volunteer for Sky Meadows to help us test Gap Run's water quality from forest to farmland. A Benefit Concert for the State Theatre
HIGHROLLER is a classic rock / southern rock band based in Orange, Virginia. The band has been in existence since 1984, performing in clubs and for private events. There have been a couple different chapters to the band with a few lineup changes throughout the past 29 years. After a six year hiatus, the story now continues. Guitarist Bruce Slaughter and drummer Dwayne Gilmore are the two remaining co-founding members of the band. Mike Smith is the lead vocalist and keyboardist and Austin Gilmore is the bassist. On lead guitar is new comer to the band lineup, Rand Coleman. It is not a coincidence that there are two Gilmore’s in the band now. Dwayne and Austin are uncle and nephew teaming up and holding down the bottom end. This next and final chapter of the band is well underway and is as strong as ever. HIGHROLLER has maintained the same explosive sound throughout its history performing music ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Bad Company to Led Zeppelin and everything else in between.

Virginia's Youth Conservation Corps program accepting crew applications

Applications are being accepted through April 15 for two three-week summer sessions of the award-winning Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps (YCC). The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will notify selected participants via e-mail by May 1.

The program will be held June 21 to July 11 and July 19 to Aug. 8.

Teams of eight to 10 participants will be chosen from current high school students between the ages of 14 and 17 (participants must be 14 by June 1). Applicants must demonstrate an interest in protecting Virginia’s environment. While no prior experience is necessary, participants will work outside, and the service is physically demanding. A positive attitude, an interest in learning, curiosity about interpreting nature, and the physical ability and desire to work outdoors are also important factors in the selection process.

YCC crew members are provided room, board, T-shirts and equipment. They receive a $500 stipend at the end of the three weeks.

YCC participants help with assorted park projects, including wildlife and fisheries habitat improvement, trail and campground construction and restoration, timber and shoreline improvement, and landscape beautification. The YCC is modeled after the federal service program AmeriCorps and the depression era Civilian Conservation Corps that built the original six Virginia State Parks.

More about the festival:
By hosting this festival, we can bring the message of these films to our community . Film is a powerful medium and a common ground that everyone enjoys. When placed in this setting, environmentally conscious films can foster and open forum where people of different opinions can start finding solutions.
Whether it is the struggle for environmental justice, information on renewable energy or an educational tale about an endangered species, the films expose people to forward thinking ideas and global awareness. We choose films that not only highlight the concerns but provide solutions, reaching people through beautiful imagery like the seeping landscapes of the Tallgrass Prairie or the grandeur of the rivers around the world.
