"The Mishaps of Musty Suffer" playing at the Packard Campus Theater

“The Mishaps of Musty Suffer” (Kileine, 1915-1917)
The Mishaps of Musty Suffer was a cartoony and surreal series of silent comedy shorts produced from 1915 to 1917. Wildly popular during their release, they have been oddly overlooked and neglected ever since. The films follow the misadventures of put-upon tramp Musty Suffer (Harry Watson Jr.), who lives a slapstick version of the Story of Job in which he bears the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, abetted by an ensemble of zanies as he tries his hand at a variety of jobs, gets subjected to medical treatments, and even marries a lemon from the garden of love. The Musty Suffer films have been preserved by the Library of Congress, and will be shown in new HD digital transfers. The program will be introduced by film historian Steve Massa. Live musical accompaniment will be provided by Ben Model, who also produced the recently-released DVD which is a joint production with the Library of Congress. 120 minutes. Free. Breathe Deep Haymarket

Breathe Deep Haymarket, a 3K walk & run, was started by volunteer coordinator Heather Busicchia to honor her late grandmother, Vivian J. Whitmer. Vivian was a strong role model for her four children and five grandchildren, a dedicated Christian, an artist, and a musician, and was never shy to voice her opinion. Despite her incredible strength, Vivian passed away of lung cancer on April 26, 2004. Although Heather was only 13 at the time of her grandmother's passing, she made a promise to herself that she would not let Vivian's memory fade... and to help create a world where other families wouldn't have to go through what hers did.

Hackensaw Boys at The State Theatre of Culpeper

With feet firmly planted in the old-time song tradition, hands soiled by the dirt of rock n’ roll and eyes fixed steadily on the future of real country music, the Hackensaw Boys are among the most exciting groups charting new territory in today’s diverse Americana music scene.
Everybody sings a bit of lead, everybody sings a bit of harmony and most members know when to shut up. Instrumentation includes banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, harmonica, upright bass, charismo (a home-made tin can contraption) and the occasional trap kit.
In the beginning they all lived in Charlottesville, VA, but now the members are spread throughout Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Louisana. For more than a decade, however, they’ve come together to tour the United States, Europe and the U.K. and to record several critically acclaimed albums.
The group’s lineup includes:
• Ferd Moyse (strings and horsehair)
• Jimmy Stelling (thumb picks)
• Brian Gorby (traps and sticks)
• David Sickmen (strings and improvised straps)
• Zach Shedd (stand up strings and fingers)

Illusion and Magic Show featuring Natalie

Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.

Wes Iseli has been doing magic since he was 7 years old. Wes currently works at resorts, country clubs, theatres, trade shows, company picnics, and high school auditoriums all over the East Coast. He still enjoys doing the smaller shows such as private parties and family reunions. Wes says he couldn’t think of a better career choice; it never gets old performing all over and entertaining thousands of people each month.
Wes Iseli also keeps himself in the public eye by performing such effects as accurately predicting the headline of a national newspaper one month in advance or by his amazing escape effects. As in the case of letting the audience tie him up completely with 100 feet of rope during his live show. Wes also survived a 24 hour magic show in December of 2007, 08, 09 & 10, where he raised money for The Children’s Miracle Network performing 72 magic shows in 24 hours.

The NightHawks at the State Theatre of Culpeper

Ticket prices:
$12 advance/$15 at the door

Sponsored by Raven Yates & David Harris
This special show includes Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin, former member of the Muddy Waters band!
What sustains a band for more than three decades? Not a hit radio band, but a roll-up-your-sleeves/drive to the next gig overnight/carry your own gear up the steps and night after night make people happy kind of band. One that makes them dance; sends them home to come back again—and again. What makes that kind band stay together through relatively few personnel changes? Answer: A good idea; a universal yet somehow unique good idea.
The Nighthawks sought not so much to reinvent rock and roll, but simply to have it reinvent itself by taking the original ingredients and following—if somewhat loosely—the original recipe. And like good cooks, the individual personalities involved ultimately affected the outcome. The band was over 10 years old and had baffled the mainstream industry before the term “roots rock” was coined to explain the likes of West Coasters like Los Lobos and The Blasters. By then, the affiliation with many of the living blues greats seemed to brand The Nighthawks a “blues band,” despite the fact that they played with Carl Perkins as well as Muddy Waters.
The Nighthawks had its genesis when lead singer-harmonica player extraordinaire Mark Wenner returned to his native Washington, D.C., after six years in New York City, lured back by the success of his friend Bobby Radcliff’s local acclaim with a blues band. Mark joined forces with a very young Jimmy Thackery and formed The Nighthawks in 1972. They spent a couple of years building The Nighthawks’ reputation with a revolving cast of characters until, in 1974, they decided
to get the best rhythm section the area had to offer: Jan Zukowski on bass and Pete Ragusa on drums. The Nighthawks set off on a musical mystery tour that took them to 49 states and a dozen countries. They played with nearly all the living blues legends as well as a new generation of bands sometimes called “the Blue Wave,” and released several important albums, including the best-selling Jacks and Kings with Pinetop Perkins, Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson, Calvin Jones and Bob Margolin.
The current line up for the Nighthawks includes:
Mark Wenner: Harmonica and Vocals
Johnny Castle: Bass Guitar and Vocals
Paul Bell: Lead Guitar and Vocals
Mark Stutso: Drums and Vocals
