REAL ESTATE TAX RELIEF PROGRAMS
DUE JUNE 30, 2016
SUBJECT: Tax relief for the elderly and/or permanently and totally disabled.
REQUIREMENTS:Must be 65 years or older or permanently and totally disabled on December 31 of the year immediately preceding the taxable year.
Must hold or partially hold title of property on January 1 of the taxable year.
Must reside in dwelling. If residing in hospitals, nursing homes, etc. for extended period of time, real estate shall be exemptso long as it is not used by or leased to others for consideration.
Must have a combined family income of less than $58,000 per year; an exemption of $10,000 per working relative is allowedagainst combined family income if relative(s) live(s) in the samehouse.Income of relative may be excluded if 1) the applicant qualified for tax relief prior to the time when the relative began living with the applicant and 2) there can be shown clear andconvincing evidence that having such relative live with and providecare for the applicant is the only alternative to permanently residingin a hospital, nursing home, or other similar facility.
Must have a net worth of less than $440,000 not including the value of their home and up to five acres.
Citizens qualifying under the permanently and totally disabledprogram must present with the application a certification by thesocial security administration, or if such person is not eligible for social security, a sworn affidavit by two medical doctors licensed to practice medicine in the commonwealth, or are military officerson active duty who practice medicine with the united states armed forces, to the effect that such person is permanently and totally disabled.
