The Southern Cafe & Music Hall Presents - “Kris Allen”

On his third full-length album Horizons, singer/songwriter Kris Allen sharpens his songcraft and brings a more boldly openhearted spirit to his soulful brand of poprock than ever before. With his past work including a 2009 self-titled debut featuring the platinum-selling single “Live Like We’re Dying,” Allen’s first independently released album finds him reaching a new level of sophistication in his melody-minded songwriting while fully tapping into his natural grace as a singer and guitarist. For Allen, Horizons began with the spontaneous writing of “Beautiful & Wild,” one of the album’s most gently powerful tracks. “That song came to me as I was falling asleep, and I got up and started writing and realized it was different from anything I’d ever done,” says the 29-year-old Arkansas native of “Beautiful & Wild,” a song partly inspired by the birth of his first child in the summer of 2013. “It wasn’t trying to be a big pop song or to please anybody else—it just felt very organic and personal and straight from the heart, and that ended up shaping the rest of the record for me.”

Library of Congress Packard Theater Presents - “All Quiet on the Western Front - Silent Version”

(Universal, 1930). The transition from the silent to the sound era in cinema did not happen overnight. Theater owners were faced with the high cost of installing the needed equipment and studios wanted to continue to release their films to the foreign market, which was simple enough to do by changing the title cards. One solution was to make two versions of a film, which is what director Lewis Milestone did with “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Many consider it one of the finest silent films of all time—and one that very few people know exists, because the sound version of it is so famous. This vivid, poignant adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s eloquent pacifist novel about German boys’ experiences as soldiers during World War I stars Lew Ayres, Louis Wolheim, John Wray, Raymond Griffith and Slim Summerville. The film was restored in 1998 by the Library of Congress and added to the National Film Registry in 1990. Live musical accompaniment will be provided by London-based Stephen Horne for this rare screening of the silent version the Academy Award winner for best picture and best direction. Black & white, 133 minutes.

The Southern Cafe & Music Hall Presents - “Adrian Belew Power Trio”

Adrian Belew (born Robert Steven Belew, December 23, 1949, in Covington, Kentucky) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. He is perhaps best known for his work as a member of the progressive rock group King Crimson (which he has fronted since 1981) and for his unusual impressionistic approach to guitar playing (involving arresting, yet frequently melodic sounds more akin to animals and machines than to standard instrumental tones).

The Jefferson Theater Presents - “STS9”

Since forming in Atlanta 15 years ago, instrumental electronic rock band STS9 has experienced a meteoric rise to the forefront of the international music scene. STS9 is Hunter Brown (guitar/sequences), Jeffree Lerner (percussion), David Phipps (keyboards/synths) and Zach Velmer (drums) and Alana Rocklin (bass). STS9 truly does it all: from headlining stages at the countries biggest festivals, to selling out shows around the country as an acoustic set-up in opera houses or as an electronic act in amphitheatres, to even performing with the likes of Jay-Z in arenas, to running their own record label, 1320 RECORDS, to using their voice as a platform for change and raising significant amounts of money towards activism efforts (including $150,000 to The Make it Right Foundation, paving the way to rebuild a house in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans). Pushing boundaries is all in a day’s work for STS9.
