Team Talk: London Olympics provide a positive world event
© Culpeper TimesEvery two years nearly every country in the world gathers to compete in the Olympic Games Summer and winter games alternate.
The Olympics were originally created to rekindle the spirit of cooperation and international friendship between the major powers of the world. The clear message this competition sends is also one that relates to the issues nations around the world are facing today.
These morals will hopefully be promoted during the games this summer, which will be held in London, England, beginning July 27.
This year will be London’s third time hosting the Olympics, making it the first location to host the games three times. The city was picked over Moscow, New York City, Madrid and Paris, beating Paris by only four votes.
Each year the host city is selected through a bidding process officiated by the International Olympic Committee. London was announced as the 2012 winner in July of 2005.
Since then the city has been working hard to prepare for the massive event. A new Olympic park has just been constructed on an industrial site to the east of London covering over 500 acres.
Some sports will also be held in a number of venues throughout the historic city. The tennis matches will be played at Wimbledon. Gymnastics, boxing, equestrian and wrestling events will be held in what is known as the “River Zone” which runs along the River Thames.
Also, events such as archery, road cycling and the triathlon will be held at other various locations throughout central London.
There were, however, some initial concerns about the capabilities of London’s transportation systems, but the city has since made several updates to their underground railways in preparation for the crowds. This will also be the biggest security challenge London has faced in several years and law enforcement officials are tirelessly preparing for the multitudes.
Some also wonder if England's economy is ready to sponsor such a big event. While the games are privately funded, venues, security, and other various expenses are met by the public budget. Despite some concerns, the public has been assured that London is ready and excited to host the games.
The torch relay began on May 19 and is currently making its way around the world and back to London. The closing ceremony will end the games on August 12. Rio De Janeiro, Brazil was also recently named as the host of the 2016 summer Olympics.
Personally, I can’t wait for this year’s Olympics. I think the world needs a positive event like this.
Despite the many struggles countries everywhere are facing, the games should be a time of cooperation and brotherhood. The modern Olympics were created to bring about international cooperation, which hopefully we will see this year.
I think this year’s games will help remind us of just how similar we all are.
