Eastern View High School wins Battlefield District theatre tournament

"St. Joseph's Retreat" took first place in the Battlefield District Theatre Tournament, Nov. 3, winning the first district theatre title for Eastern View High School. The cast and crew will travel to Lafayette High School on Nov. 17 for the regional tournament.
Directed by TheatreEV's teacher and director Jeff Walker, "St. Joseph's Retreat" was written by Joshua Logan Walker, an EVHS junior and son of the director.
Sweeping the top acting awards, Joshua also took home a best actor medal in the district tournament, playing the role of "Georgie," a homeless man who becomes a patient in a mental hospital. Elena Kidwell earned a best actress medal for "Cecilia," another patient.
Eastern View senior Alexander Kramer received an honorable mention award for acting, as "Jerome."
"This is a big day for Eastern View, our drama department and these students," said Jeff Walker. "They worked very hard throughout the fall to put on this show and the results have been exemplary."
The director explained: "The play starts out as a tour of a fictional asylum. The audience members then get to meet various patients throughout the performance. It is at times funny, touching and even disturbing - all due to Joshua's inventive story and the cast's commitment to bringing a real sense of who these patients and their caretakers are."
"St. Joseph's Retreat" was also recognized at another competition. At the Virginia Theatre Association High School Theatre Festival, Oct. 26, two performers received All Star Cast Awards: Elena Zanella, as "Katherine" and Nathan Rafala, as "Andrew." Zanella and Rafala are both Cyclone seniors who have appeared a number of times in TheatreEV productions, notably in the 2011 presentation of "The Diary of Anne Frank" as Mr. and Mrs. van Daan.
At the VTA festival, Joshua Walker was also singled out for a Judge's Award for student playwright for his original script.
