Eastern View freshman sets girls district swim record

The Eastern View High School girls swim team may have only finished fourth among seven teams at last weekend's Battlefield District meet at the University of Mary Washington, but with two freshman earning titles, the future looks bright.

James Monroe High School won the district meet with 125 points. EVHS had 58 and Culpeper County High School, 3.

Cyclone Freshman Annie Boone swam a 59.48 in the 100 backstroke to set a district record. She also claimed first in the 200 individual medley. And freshman Jacqueline Barklund was the winner in the 100 breaststroke. Those two girls also teamed with Allie Vaught and Jessie Ritz to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay.

Cyclone Owen Van Krimpen won the boys 500 freestyle and took second in the 200 individual medley. He teamed up with Jarrett Sites, Scott Johnston and Parker Sekol for a third in the 200 medley relay.

The Eastern View boys team finished fifth, behind CCHS, which took fourth. James Monroe also won the boys side of districts with 138 points. CCHS had 50.5 and EVHS scored 38.

The Culpeper boys were led by seniors Alex Bessette and Lee Cole.

Bessette was second in the boys 50 freestyle and third in the 100 butterfly. Cole was second in the 100 backstroke.

Cole teamed with his brother Carter, along with Bessette and Mason Azais to finish second in the 200 medley relay and third in the 400 freestyle relay.

Christianburg is the site for the Group AA state meet on Feb. 14-16 and CCHS and EVHS will be well-represented.
