Culpeper to show ‘Reel Love’

Culpeper officials are making plans to unveil the Reel LOVE sculpture in a town-owned park area across Commerce Street from the Depot on Commerce on at 2 p.m. Nov. 14.

The sculpture, several months in the machining, promotes the “Virginia is For Lovers” theme that has remained so popular for more than 40 years as the state’s slogan promoting tourism.

To build on that popularity, Culpeper was one of 11 localities selected by the Virginia Tourism Corporation to participate in a program to further promote LOVE in the state. This campaign has the tagline of “LOVE is at the heart of every Virginia vacation.”

Beginning Nov. 14, visitors to downtown Culpeper, who walk, drive or arrive by train, will see the new artwork promoting LOVE. Using more than 100 film reels donated by the Library of Congress Campus Theater, local artist Roque Castro has spent months crafting the large sculpture spelling out LOVE, using those recycled film reels.

Roque and his family relocated back home to Virginia after a 10-year corporate career in software sales. Now, with plenty of work space, fresh country air and a dozen years of pent up design ideas, his free time is spent picking through farm scrap-yards, peeling boards off old barns and producing the product line that has become Yesterday Reclaimed.

“In recent years, the arts have stepped forward as one of Culpeper’s most valuable assets. With the Library of Congress National Center for Audiovisual Conservation firmly planted in our backyard, the renovated State Theatre preparing to reopen next year, and so many of our residents involved in artistic endeavors of one kind of another, Culpeper is fast becoming known for our emerging arts scene” said Lori Sorrentino, Director of Culpeper’s Tourism program. “This LOVE artwork will reflect film and the arts in a big way, and tie it into our statewide tourism message. We’re so excited to have a local artist create what we hope is the first of many original works of art in Culpeper”.

The giant LOVE sculpture will serve as a centerpiece for tourists coming to enjoy Culpeper and as a reminder to local residents of the importance of tourism in the state and locally in Culpeper.

"Virginia is for Lovers is about love - pure and simple, and has been for more than 40 years," said Rita McClenny, interim president and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation. “The LOVE artwork promotes Virginia as an ideal destination for families looking to completely connect on a Virginia vacation."

Once the installation is complete, visitors are encouraged to stop by the Culpeper artwork, take a picture and post to www.Facebook.com/VirginiaisforLovers or on Twitter and use the hashtag #LOVEVA. A complete list of LOVE artwork locations across the state can be found at www.Virginia.org/LOVE.
