Culpeper police charge two men in drug case

An ongoing investigation and a little luck resulted in the arrest of two Georgia men the past few weeks suspected of distributing cocaine and heroin in Culpeper.

Early Tuesday morning, officers from the Culpeper Police and Culpeper Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Unit were executing a drug search warrant at a residence on Old Fredericksburg Road.

“We happened upon a male in the parking lot of an auto salvage yard nearby acting suspiciously,” said Culpeper police Lt. Tim Chilton.

Officer Eric Grant began talking to the man, who allegedly provided a false name to the officer. Police then spoke to the woman who owned the car the man claimed was broken down and determined that the man was Andre Slocumb, 27. The woman gave police consent to search her car. Police discovered about six ounces of suspected cocaine and suspected methamphetamine in the car. Police also recovered about $5,000 in cash.

Slocumb, who gave an address in the 200 block of Bickers Street, was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and providing false identity to police.

Chilton said the street value of the recovered suspected drugs was about $25,000.

Police executed a search warrant at Slocumb’s address on Bickers Street. There they recovered a small amount of suspected marijuana and cocaine. They also learned that a man arrested March 4 in the 1300 block of Orange Road in apparently unrelated drug investigation lived at the same address as Slocumb.

Police set up surveillance on March 4 about 8 p.m.in the parking lot of the Three Star Texaco along Orange Road following complaints from the management of open air drug sales in the parking lot.

After watching several vehicles and people getting into a car, leaving and returning to the parking lot, Sgt. Norma McGuckin approached Shawn Walker, 33, of the 600 block of North East Street, and began talking with him. Walker allegedly handed the officer a bag of suspected heroin. Walker was charged with possession of heroin.

As a result of that investigation, police also charged Keith Jackson, 33, of the 1800 block of Piccadilly Circus, with possession of heroin with intent to distribute.

Lt. Chilton also spoke with Dontavis Cainion, 30, who gave an address on the 100 block of South East Street. He was a passenger in the car that contained Walker.

“I noticed what appeared to be a big ball of dope in his hand,” said Chilton.

Cainion refused to hand the alleged drugs over to police and threw them, according to Chilton.

Cainion, who allegedly resisted arrest, was subdued. The suspected drugs were recovered along with about $1,400 in cash.

Police charged Cainion with possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

The continuing investigation showed that both Cainion and Slocumb were from Warner Robbins, Ga. and had been in Culpeper two and four months, respectively.

“We think they are responsible for large amounts of narcotics in the area,” said Chilton. “The investigation is ongoing, as we are working with Houston County Sheriff’s office in Georgia.”
